Vinyl panels are designed to move with temperature swings, which means the seams and battens are never fully sealed — they rely on overlap and gravity, the same way lap siding does, which works against the vertical, wind-loaded water path this profile creates. In a climate with regular wind-driven rain, that gap tolerance becomes a liability rather than a feature.
LP SmartSide is an engineered wood product with a resin-treated strand core. It performs well in many climates, but it is still wood-based, which means cut edges, fastener penetrations, and seams need to stay sealed and coated for the life of the product. In a moss-prone, high-moisture region, any lapse in that maintenance — a missed caulk line, a scratch in the factory coating — gives moisture a path into a wood-based substrate. We don't think that's a fair trade to ask a Lynden homeowner to manage indefinitely.
